PET ODORS & STAIN REMOVAL

Home / services/ Pet Odors & Stain Removal

Pet & human urines are detected by our team using

a professional UV light.

Pet urine affects both your carpet's structural integrity and your family's health through chemical changes, bacterial growth, and off-gassing. When left untreated, it seeps through the carpet surface into the padding and subfloor, creating a persistent reservoir of contaminants.

Ammonia Exposure:

As urine decomposes, it releases ammonia gas, which is a potent lung irritant. Prolonged inhalation can cause burning sensations in the nose and throat, coughing, and shortness of breath.

Respiratory Irritation

For individuals with asthma, COPD, or allergies, the presence of ammonia and airborne urea crystals can trigger severe attacks or chronic respiratory fatigue.

Bacterial and Viral Risks

Untreated urine is a breeding ground for pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli. These can be transferred to family members through indirect contact, such as walking barefoot or children playing on the floor.

Mold and Mildew:

Moisture trapped in the carpet padding often leads to mold growth, including varieties like Penicillium or Aspergillus, which can cause long-term lung conditions and allergic reactions.

Impact on Carpet and Home

Fiber Damage

Pet urine starts as an acid but shifts to alkaline as it dries. This chemical reaction can permanently damage carpet dyes—leading to yellow or orange staining—and make fibers brittle and prone to fraying.

Padding and Subfloor Rot:

Because liquids quickly seep downward, a small surface spot often masks a much larger area of contamination in the padding. Over time, this can lead to wood rot in the subfloor and structural damage to the flooring.

Permanent Odors:

Urine salts are hydrophilic, meaning they attract moisture from the air. On humid days, these salts reactivate, causing old odors to resurface even years after the initial accident

Odors & Contaminants removal with Ozone

Ozone machines (ozone generators) are popular for odor removal because they don't just "cover up" smells—they chemically destroy the molecules causing them. Unlike air fresheners that use perfume to mask a scent, ozone changes the chemical makeup of the air and surfaces it touches.

How They Work

Ozone ($O_3$) is a highly reactive gas made of three oxygen atoms. When the machine releases it into a room, the third oxygen atom "breaks off" and attaches itself to odor-causing molecules like those from smoke or pet urine. This process, called oxidation, breaks down the chemical bonds of the pollutant, effectively neutralizing the smell at its source.

Why Use Them for Specific Odors?

Pet Odors & Urine:

Pets leave behind dander, skin oils, and urine. While cat urine is notoriously difficult because of uric acid crystals that embed deep in carpets, ozone can penetrate porous materials to oxidize these organic compounds and the bacteria feeding on them.

Smoke (Cigarette or Fire):

Smoke consists of thousands of tiny particles and phenol gases that cling to walls, ceilings, and inside HVAC ducts. Because ozone is a gas, it can reach into these tiny nooks and crannies where physical cleaning can't reach.

Mold & Mildew

Ozone is a powerful disinfectant that can kill airborne mold spores and neutralize the "musty" smell they produce.

Critical Safety Guidelines

Ozone is a powerful lung irritant and can be dangerous if used incorrectly. If you decide to use one, you must follow these rules:

Unoccupied Spaces Only:

Never run an ozone machine while people, pets, or even plants are in the room.

Remove Sensitive Items

High levels of ozone can damage rubber, certain plastics, and electronics.

The "Wait" Period:

After the machine finishes its cycle, you must wait at least 1–2 hours for the ozone to dissipate (it naturally reverts back to $O_2$ oxygen).

Ventilate

Open windows and doors thoroughly before re-occupying the space.

When to Call a Professional

For extreme cases, like a house previously owned by a heavy smoker or severe pet saturation, a consumer-grade machine might not be enough. In those instances, you may need a "shock treatment" from a professional service or deep cleaning of the subflooring before using ozone.
